On Premise Licensing Structure

Each server that runs Microsoft Dynamics CRM requires a CRM Server License. Three Dynamics CRM Server Editions are available:

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 Workgroup Server

Offers the same rich feature set as Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Professional Server.
Includes and supports a maximum of 5 named user licenses.
Licensed as a Specialty Server.
Step-Up to Microsoft Dynamics CRM Professional Server available to support 6+ users.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 Professional Server

Rich feature set and supports single tenant deployment.
Users are only limited by Server capacity, there is no licensing limit on the number of users
Licensed under the Server/CAL licensing model (see below).
Step-Up to Microsoft Dynamics CRM Enterprise Server available for multi-tenancy support.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 Enterprise Server

Servers multiple client organisations by supporting multi-tenant deployments.
Users are only limited by Server capacity, there is no licensing limit on the number of users
Licensed under the Server/CAL licensing model.

Client Access Licences - on premise

Microsoft Dynamics CRM Professional and Enterprise Servers follow the Microsoft Server/CAL licensing model requiring a separate Server license for each Server on which the software is installed, plus a User Client Access License (CAL) for every internal user who accesses CRM.

User CAL	With a user CAL, each licensed user may access the Server from any device. A User is defined as any user or device who accesses the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server, files, data content or Dynamics CRM functionality.
Device CAL	With a device CAL, the CAL is assigned to a specific device which will be shared by non-concurrent users over time, such as in a shift worker or in a call centre scenario.

User and Device CALs can be mixed in a deployment and any CAL may have the User or Device distinction.
User and Device CALs are priced the same and may be ordered separately.

For the Professional and Enterprise Servers there are three CAL functionalities:

Full CAL - complete read-write access to all capabilities within Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.
Limited CAL - read-only access, e.g., for reports and users may view or query CRM data.
Full Use Additive CAL - may only be purchased to supplement a Limited CAL with write-access capability for Users who may later require full read and write access.

External Connectors

Microsoft Dynamics CRM External Connectors enables businesses to extend CRM beyond internal users to customers, partners and suppliers through any application/graphical user interface other than Microsoft Dynamics CRM clients on a per server basis.

An External Connector must be purchased for each server that hosts an application that provides external access to Microsoft Dynamics CRM data.
